I started making Banks out of old Post Office Box Doors in
the Spring of 2005.
Now, this not a original idea, my spin on this was
to use antique lock box doors and then construct a box out of exotic woods.
I then put a hand rubbed finish on the wood. There is labor intensive
work done on the finish. I achieve this finish through different sanding
processes from 60 grit sanding to 600 grit sanding. I then steel wool the grain
to achieve a super slick feel to the grain and sheen to the wood.
The
construction of the boxes themselves is box-jointed and glued. Although I
am set up to do this process, I am constantly experimenting with different
techniques and joint styles. So this means every box I make is a little unique
and one of a kind; thus making it special to me and who ever the
future owner maybe, hopefully you!
Now this wood is expensive; it is not
like buying a piece oak at Home Depot. But at the same time, I have some less
expensive pieces. The doors come from all over. I do not have a direct source
for these, I buy them. They are antique in nature - U.S. Postal Service
Doors taken out of service and range in age from 25 to 100 years old. The
older the door, the more it costs to produce. Each door is one unto itself in
markings and aging. It can be a key or a combination lock with
different manufactures.
Take a look at my inventory and hopefully you can find a
safe you like and enjoy for years to come; then hand down as an air loom for
your family -- this is my goal!
